Video player accessibility features

Our video hosting provider has been chosen with accessibility in mind. Here's what's available to help you get the most out of session videos.

Closed captions

  • Look for the CC button in the video player controls to switch captions on. Click it again to turn them off.
  • Where multiple caption tracks are available, you can select between them.
  • Captions can also be generated automatically.
  • Caption appearance (size, position, colour) is generally controlled through your browser or device accessibility settings.

Embedded transcripts

Sessions include embedded transcripts in the video player, which is useful if you prefer reading along, want to search for a specific point, or have hearing impairments.

Keyboard navigation

The video player supports full keyboard navigation, so you can play, pause, adjust volume, and move through a video without a mouse. The most useful shortcuts:

Key Action
Space or K Play / Pause
Arrow up / down Volume up / down
Left arrow or J Rewind
Right arrow or L Forward
C Toggle captions
M Mute / unmute
F Toggle full screen
Shift + < Slow down playback
Shift + > Speed up playback
Tab Navigate player controls

Highly visible focus indicators appear on interactive elements as you navigate by keyboard, so you can always see where you are in the player.

Screen reader compatibility

The player has been built with clear labelling on buttons and controls, plus ARIA roles and attributes, for compatibility with screen readers including NVDA, JAWS, and VoiceOver.

Adjustable playback speed

You can change the playback speed of any session video for easier comprehension. Use the speed control in the player or the keyboard shortcuts above.

Chapters

Where chapters are available for a session, you can navigate directly to specific sections through the player's timeline or the chapters list.

Casting and large screens

The player supports casting to compatible devices if you'd prefer to watch on a larger screen.

Caption quality

Automatically generated captions are generally accurate, but occasional errors are possible, particularly with names, technical terms, or where audio quality varies. If you spot something significantly off, let us know.
